Choosing a Life according to the Gospel

Summer Session in Le Puy-en-Velay (France)

The Curriculum...
  • The session is intended for young people, students or Christian professionals who are eager to make a life decision and for those, married or consecrated, who want to further clarify the meaning of their choices.

  • As a guide to discernment we take as a reference the reflections of H.U. von Balthasar and A. von Speyr on the state of Christian life.

  • We begin on July 31, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Penitents' Chapel, then a general presentation of the theme in the nearby «Centre de musique sacrée.» The session ends on August 15, with the Mass of the Assumption in the cathedral.

  • The sessions, which take place in the morning, Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., include a time of personal study, sharing in language seminar groups and a conclusion in the form of a general exchange.

  • The session is organized by Fr. Servais S.J. and Casa Balthasar, in collaboration with Fr. Florent de Rugy, priest of the Diocese of Puy-en-Velay, and other members of the Lubac-Balthasar-Speyr Association.

...within the framework of an ecclesial experience.
  • Le Puy-en-Velay (Auvergne), whose 12th-century Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Notre Dame is a starting point for the pilgrimage of St. James of Compostela. In this place, so rich of spirituality and culture, believers feel stimulated to learn more about the lives of previous generations. People who helped to give a symbolic visibility on earth to the City of God and thus to live better as Christians in today's world.

  • The gathering of people from various countries and continents helps us to understand the properly «Catholic» nature of Christian life, with its essential openness to a greater totality that makes each person a member in the Body of Christ.

  • The session is marked by a style of fraternal simplicity as well as Christian joy and seriousness, like the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela’s attitude, animated by a desire for conversion and openness to the Lord’s ever new and surprising call.

  • It intends to promote in the participants an integration of reason and life of faith, and to facilitate this, moments of liturgical and personal prayer as well as meals and evening cultural activities are proposed outside the study program.
